Since the 2020 premiere of 1000-lb Sisters, all five of the Slaton siblings have had weight loss surgery and changed their lives forever. The show centers around the weight loss journeys of Amy Slaton and Tammy Slaton, but their other siblings have also gotten in on the action. Tammy, Amy, Chris Combs, Misty Wentworth, and Amanda Halterman have all had weight loss surgery over the last few years, and their results are nothing short of incredible.

Weight loss surgery, also known as metabolic and bariatric surgery, covers an umbrella of procedures that alter the digestive tract to aid patients in losing weight. In many cases, the stomach is made smaller, so the amount of food intake is physically limited. This is a serious and potentially dangerous operation that is a last-ditch effort. For several of the 1000-lb Sisters stars, losing weight was a matter of life and death.

Tammy Slaton

Duodenal Switch

In April, Reddit user ExperienceAny8333 asked which of the bariatric surgeries the Slatons receive, and devoted fans flooded the post with answers gleaned directly from the Slatons and their doctors. The show’s most incredible weight loss success is undoubtedly Tammy. When she made her debut during 1000-lb Sisters season 1, 33-year-old Tammy weighed over 600 pounds. Despite pleas from her family to lose weight, Tammy seemed to get bigger every time she stepped on a scale. She weighed 720 pounds at her heaviest.

After a health scare landed her in a medically induced coma, Tammy was scared and decided to take her weight loss seriously.

Realizing her life was on the line, she went to see bariatric surgeon Dr. Eric Smith. After Tammy worked on treating her food addiction, Dr. Smith performed a bariatric surgical procedure known as a duodenal switch on Tammy in July 2022. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a duodenal switch modifies the stomach and small intestine, restricting how much food the stomach can hold and how much nutrition the small intestine can absorb. After surgery, a now 37-year-old Tammy lost an incredible 440 pounds.

Amy Slaton

Gastric Bypass

During the first episode of 1000-lb Sisters, 32-year-old Amy stepped on a scale to find that she weighed over 400 pounds. She cried because it had been a long time since she weighed herself and hadn’t realized she had gained so much weight. Amy had always wanted to be a mother, but she was too overweight for a healthy pregnancy. Thankfully, Amy was able to get gastric bypass surgery by Dr. Charles Proctor in 2019.

According to the Mayo Clinic, gastric bypass divides one’s stomach, sending all food to a reduced small pouch, which limits the amount of food consumed. After her surgery, Amy lost an incredible 125 pounds. She went on to make her dreams of motherhood come true, giving birth to two healthy sons, Gage and Glenn Halterman.

Sadly, after four years of marriage, her marriage to her children’s father, Michael Halterman, ended in divorce in 2023.

When Amy and Tammy’s brother, Chris, made his television debut, he weighed 450 pounds. Though he embarked on his weight loss journey in a team effort alongside Tammy, he lost weight more quickly, and by the end of 1000-lb Sisters season 2, he received gastric sleeve bypass surgery. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a sleeve bypass involves removing a large piece of the stomach, reducing it to just a narrow sleeve. Chris went on to lose 150 pounds and is looking forward to skin removal surgery.

In March, Dr. Eric Smith, who treated Tammy too, posted amazing before-and-after pictures of Chris on Instagram. On the left side of the split screen is a photo of Chris before he lost weight, and on the right is a recent photo of a slimmed-down Chris finishing a 5k run. The caption reads, “Remember when riding a rollercoaster for the first time was a big deal for @chris.combs.5243? Well, Chris just left that thrill in the dust by finishing his first 5k this past weekend!

Misty Slaton Wentworth has been a part of the cast of 1000-lb Sisters since day one as Amy and Tammy’s supportive sister. While Amy and Tammy are hot-headed, Misty is the calm and quiet sister. Like all of her siblings, Misty has struggled with her weight for her entire life, especially after she gave birth to four children. Misty decided to do something about her weight, and in March 2023, Misty had bariatric surgery. Like Tammy, Misty had a Duodenal Switch with Dr. Smith.

Though it’s still unknown how much weight Misty lost, she looks much thinner these days and no longer needs diabetes medication.

Amanda Halterman

Sleeve Bypass

Amanda didn’t appear in the first three seasons of 1000-lb Sisters because she was going through a divorce, but she’s always been an integral part of Amy and Tammy’s lives. Amanda had revision bariatric surgery in March 2023, on the same day as Misty and with the same doctor. In March, Amanda posted that it was the one-year anniversary of her surgery, or “surgeversary,” and she looked dramatically thinner than ever before. It’s unclear what kind of surgery she had the first time around, but her recent surgery appears to have been a sleeve bypass.
