1000-lb Sisters star Misty Slaton Wentworth had gastric bypass surgery in 2023, and it’s time to talk about why she waited so long to have the life-saving procedure. The series, which premiered in 2020, centers on the body makeovers of 37-year-old Tammy Slaton and 36-year-old Amy Slaton, but several of their other siblings have been on their own weight-loss journeys. Their oldest sister, 48-year-old Misty, has always been close to her family, and is obviously the peacemaker of the bunch. Unlike her loud, opinionated, and hot-headed siblings, Misty is a cool and calming voice of reason.
Misty made her television debut in 2020, on 1000-lb Sisters season 1, but she didn’t have bariatric surgery until March 2023. Both Amy and their brother, 41-year-old Chris Combs, had their surgeries during the first few seasons of the show. However, Misty waited until 1000-lb Sisters season 5. Considering she had diabetes to deal with, it seemed like Misty would want surgery right away. Though Misty was eager to have the surgery, there was a very good reason why her physician, Dr. Eric Smith, didn’t approve Misty for a procedure until 1000-lb Sisters season 5.
Misty Had To Kick A Terrible Habit
Amanda Halterman Had The Same Bad Habit
During 1000-lb Sisters season 5, episode 4, Misty and another Slaton sister, Amanda Halterman, met with Dr. Smith. He asked them both if they’d quit smoking, as it was the last prerequisite before he would clear them for bariatric surgery. Both Misty and Amanda had smoked on and off for much of their adult lives, so breaking the habit wasn’t easy. Determined to get gastric bypass surgery, both Misty and Amanda were able to kick their nicotine addiction (hopefully, for good),
Misty and Amanda are more than just sisters – they’re also best friends who do everything together. Not only did they quit smoking together, but they were approved for surgery together. 1000-lb Sisters season 5 featured a scene where Misty and Amanda announced their upcoming surgery to Tammy, Amy, and Chris. “Me and Misty’s been going to see Dr. Smith,” Amanda told her siblings, who were worried about their sisters. While the other Slatons haven’t been lucky in love, Misty has been married to David Wentworth for 23 years. Misty and David have four sons together. Though there have been rumors about Misty and David having issues, Misty made it clear she’s a happily married woman. As the mother of four sons, Misty’s job as a stay-at-home mom kept her busy for most of her life, and likely held her back from having surgery sooner. Since she’s raising children, finding the time to recover from surgery might be tough.

Misty & Amanda Had Back-To-Back Surgeries
On The Same Day
Despite their siblings’ concerns, Misty and Amanda had bariatric surgery with the same doctor on the same day, in March 2023. In January 2024, Dr. Eric Smith posted an Instagram clip of Misty Slaton going in for bariatric surgery. In the footage, Chris is there with Misty in the hospital, up until the moment she’s wheeled into surgery. Misty shouldn’t feel bad about waiting so long to have surgery. She may have wanted to have it done sooner, but things happened the way they did for a reason, and she had the surgery when she was ready.
Though this appeared to be Misty’s first surgery, Amanda had bariatric surgery once before, in 2014. Though it’s not uncommon for some people to have revision weight loss surgery, there’s a higher risk of complications for the patient the second time around. Luckily, both Misty and Amanda made it through their surgeries with flying colors, and without complications.
Misty Looks Great After Weight Loss
The Pounds Have Melted Away
Though it’s unclear how much weight Misty has lost since receiving weight-loss surgery, she looked like a different person in a December 2023 TikTok post. This clip was filmed about ten months after Misty’s bariatric surgery, and in the looped image, Misty’s face is skinnier than it has ever been – she is almost unrecognizable. More importantly, Misty no longer needs diabetes medication.
In response to the post, Amanda wrote, ” Big sis is the littlest sis now. I am so proud of you @Doll1976 always have been. You are my goals. There are no words to express how thankful I am to call you my big sis. Love you. “
The Slatons have traced the origins of their weight gain back to their difficult childhoods. They attribute it to genetics, emotional eating, and socioeconomic factors. Luckily, Misty and all the other Slaton siblings have been able to break the cycle – they inspire others who want to lose weight. 1000-lb Sisters season 6 will likely follow Misty and the rest of the Slatons as they continue their weight-loss journeys together.
