When 1000-lb Sisters first premiered in 2020, Tammy Slaton weighed over 700 pounds and wore size 8XL in clothing, but she has since lost over 400 pounds and slimmed down to size 2XL. Before Tammy lost all the weight, she had very little mobility and could barely leave her house; she was basically a prisoner in her own home. After a health scare landed her in the hospital and a medically induced coma, Tammy realized she had to make a drastic change.
The 1000-lb Sisters season 5 star checked herself into a rehab facility, where she focused on diet, exercise, and dealing with the psychological aspects of weight loss. After losing enough weight to be able to breathe on her own, doctors removed her intubation tube. At that point, she was cleared for gastric bypass surgery and was able to slim down even more.

On July 20, 2021, Tammy posted two photos of herself from before she lost so much weight, with a caption that read, “Bright as the sun, dark as night.” In the photos, Tammy is at her largest size, wearing an 8XL black top and black lipstick. Looking back at photos of Tammy before her weight loss, it’s easy to be impressed and inspired by what she accomplished in such a short time. Tammy has hit many milestones and has no intention of stopping now.

On October 13, 2023, the Instagram fan account @1000lb_realitytv_updates posted an old-school photo of a very young brunette, Tammy. The account misidentified the photo, claiming it was of Amy, but in the comment section, Tammy commented, “That’s Tammy aka me.” In an interview with People, Tammy said she started gaining weight in her childhood and attributed it to genetics, emotional eating, and socioeconomic factors. “I’ve always had a weight issue,” Tammy said, adding, “I was born 9 lbs. 10 oz., and then I just kept gaining.”
She Struggled To Breathe
On October 5, 2020, Tammy posted an Instagram selfie of herself wearing a dark army green tank top and cool aviator shades. In the photo, she’s wearing a breathing tube because, at that size, Tammy couldn’t breathe on her own. She was carrying around so much extra weight that her lungs literally couldn’t expand enough on their own to take in enough oxygen. Thankfully, since taking this photo, Tammy has lost weight and is thriving, including going on a Slaton family boat ride.

Tammy isn’t the only member of the Slaton family who has lost weight over the years. She and her sister, Amy Slaton, have lost a combined 600 lbs plus since the show premiered. Their other siblings, Chris Combs, Amanda Halterman, and Misty Slaton, also got in on the weight-loss action.
